14-year-old sex abuse victim who became a mother at 13 in critical condition after giving birth to second child in Akwa Ibom

A 14-year-girl is currently in critical condition after giving birth to her second child in Eket, Akwa Ibom state on Thursday November 26.

The teen identified as Grace Ufot and her then 10 months old baby were rescued from the streets of Eket by Child’s Right and Rehabilitation Network (CRARN) volunteers during the COVID-19 lockdown.

After her rescue, Grace claimed that she was tortured by her family and thrown out into the streets where she was sexually abused by different men. She bears scars and wounds on different parts of her body.

She said it was her family who first brutalized her before sending her to the streets to be abused, violated and impregnated.  She also claimed that some men have tried to steal her child on several occasions.

Confirming the latest development in a statement on Friday, November 27, the NGO said that Grace gave birth to a baby girl at the General Hospital, Eket but unfortunately, she is in a critical condition and a state of coma.

Read their statement below;

“Just as thousands of children in this part of the globe, she became a pariah child at the age of 12, dropped out of school and gave birth to her first child at the age of 13,”

“The stresses and trauma she endured made her to become mentally challenged. Her name is Grace Otu (last name changed) and from Mkpat Enin, Akwa Ibom State. Even though her parents show some form of love towards her, the stigma and psychiatric condition couldn’t let them keep her.

“She roamed the streets with her one year old child and was frequently violated by men she cannot even remember. In one of the cases, it was horrible and dire so she was rescued to the CRARN Children Centre where she currently receives support and medical care.

“Today she gave birth to a sweet baby girl at the General Hospital, Eket. Though in a critical condition and in a state of coma, we hope that she’ll be fine in no time.

“Unfortunately, too and for some medical conditionings, which we cannot put in print here, the doctors have advised that she shall NOT be breastfeeding her child.”
